This recipe is very similar to the chocolate-covered pretzels. In fact, you can actually make both at the same time with melted chocolate, which would be perfect to make a few gifts for the holidays or snacks for a holiday party.

Ingredients to make Chocolate Dipped Potato Chips

If you are going to have the kids help you make these, which they are totally easy enough to do that, I would recommend using thicker potato chips. Potato chips can be very delicate, so kettle cooked or rippled potato chips are a good choice for this one.

  • Potato Chips
  • Chocolate Chips (or candy melts)
  • Optional: Toppings like crushed OREO cookies, sprinkles, coconut, etc.

How do you make Chocolate Covered Potato Chips?

Wax paper on an apricot plate with a pile of potato chips

Cover a cookie sheet with wax paper to lay the pretzels down. I find wax paper works better to release the chocolate-covered treats than parchment paper.

OREO cookie crumbs in a yellow bowl.

This step is completely optional. I decided to add crushed OREO cookies to my potato chips, but potato chips just dipped in chocolate are a delicious gourmet treat.

Crush the OREO cookies in a blender or food processor until they are all crumbs. Pour into a bowl and set aside.

A glass bowl with a mixture of semi sweet and milk chocolate chips.

I like to mix together semi sweet and milk chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl for melting together. You can also use just semi sweet chips or just milk chocolate chips.

Then, heat them in 30-second increments on HIGH in the microwave. Stir after each time you heat them. Don’t skip this step!

Then, continue heating and stirring for 30 seconds at a time, until the chocolate chips are completely melted and smooth.

If they seem gloppy, you can add a teaspoon of shortening, or my personal favorite is these Paramount flakes, which are oil flakes. I add a pinch at a time and stir them up, until the chocolate is smooth like honey.

Gently dip about half a potato chip into the chocolate. Then hold it up and let the excess chocolate drip off the chip.

Lay the potato chip on the wax paper and move onto the next one and dip it in chocolate.

If you are adding anything extra to the potato chips like crushed cookies or sprinkles, dip 3 to 4 potato chips in the chocolate and then add the topping while the chocolate is still wet.

To add the OREO cookie crumbs, sprinkle them on top of the melted chocolate on top of the potato chips.

When you’ve finished dipping and sprinkling all the potato chips, place the cookie sheet into the freezer for 10-15 minutes to quickly harden the chocolate.

When the chocolate is completely hardened, if you’re going to set them out for a party, store them in a gallon-size zipper baggie until you’re ready to serve them.

If you’re giving them as gifts, place several potato chips in a cellophane bag and seal it up.
